Choosing what to Wear For Your Actors Headshot

Making the right choice of what to wear is critical.

Preparation plays a big part in how the photo shoot goes and choosing what to wear plays a vital role in the overall look of the headshot and the feel you’re trying to portray.

If you choose to wear a strongly patterned or striped top then this can easily distract the eye of the viewer away from your face down towards your top – which is precisely what we don’t want. This is why I advocate wearing plain tops; the neckline doesn’t matter too much. I always advise my clients to bring a few different changes especially for the ladies who have a much wider range of things to wear. Off the shoulder, v-necks, thin strapped tops, shirts and even roll necks are all fine. For guys formal shirts are just as popular as casual ones, t-shirts and jumpers are ok too and some can even get away with a vest. If in doubt about a particular garment then my advice is to bring it along and we can always choose not to use it on the day – it’s better than saying to me “I’ve got a top just like that but I left it at home”

Another thing that can distract the eye of the viewer is jewellery. Large or multiple ear-rings, bold strong necklaces anything that can glint or shine in the light and create a distraction.

Remember we want the viewer’s focus to be on your face and eyes and nowhere else.
