i think that standing barbell presses are great for developinng ab and core strength and development. you can really feel your core at work when you are pressing from this position. you will have ab soreness the next day if you do the exercise the right way. your core needs to stabilize your entire body while your shoulders are working this exercise. i use this exercise almost every time i work my shoulders. it is one of the best overall compound exercise that you can perform. it will give you flat six pack ab and tight obliques also if you try them.
